Assumption Adds Division I Women’s Hockey Program

Assumption University, a private university located in Worcester, Massachusetts, announced on Wednesday that the school will be adding a Division I women’s college hockey program that will take the ice starting in the 2023-2024 season. The team will play at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.

Additionally, it was announced that when Assumption begins play in ‘23-’24, they will do so as the eighth member of the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance. Assumption participates at the NCAA Division II level in their other varsity sports, but like fellow conference mates Franklin Pierce, Saint Anselm, St. Michael’s, and Stonehill, will compete at the D-I level in women’s hockey since the NCAA already combined D-I and D-II in women’s ice hockey.

Notably, the school’s press release seems to confirm that NEWHA will begin receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for their conference beginning in ‘23-’24 as well.
