Maureen Murphy Granted Eligibility at Northeastern

Matthews Decal

Providence college transfer Maureen Murphy has been granted immediate eligibility to being playing at Northeastern this season, the school announced in a press release.

Murphy transferred to Northeastern this summer after three seasons at Providence, but had not been granted eligibility yet. Though NCAA women’s hockey allows players to transfer without sitting out a year, Hockey East league rules require players to sit out for a year if they transfer to another school within the conference.

In the press release, Murphy expressed her gratitude to the Hockey East executive committee for granting her release:

I am really excited about the opportunity to be part of an institution, athletics department and league that has made this possible, and I want to express my utmost appreciation to the Hockey East and the Women’s Hockey Executive Committee for taking the time out of their hectic schedules to consider this decision.”

Murphy led the Friars in scoring in each of her first two seasons in Providence scoring 28 points as a freshman and 43 points as a sophomore. She scored 11 points through the first 11 games of her junior season last year before her season was cut short due to injury.

It’s a big addition for a Northeastern team that is currently ranked fourth nationally and seen as the east’s best bet at knocking off the three Big Ten schools in the national tournament. Meanwhile, Providence currently leads the Hockey East standings, although Northeastern has three games in hand and a better winning percentage at the moment.
