Detroit Honeybaked Bantam Major defenseman Mitch Eliot announced on his Twitter account(@mitch_eliot44) that he has verbally committed to play college hockey at Michigan State. Eliot is believed to be the first player born in 1998 to commit to a college hockey program.
Information is scarce on Eliot, what with him just having turned 15 years old two weeks ago, but he plays on an absolutely loaded Detroit Honeybaked team that has a 21-1-1 record through the very tough HPHL AAA league season(a slight step down from their 19-0-1 record last year as Bantam Minors). Eliot is listed with 4 goals and 5 assists through 22 HPHL games this year, though that puts him last among regular players on a Honeybaked that has the league's top four scorers.
Eliot's commitment continues a trend for Michigan State under head coach Tom Anastos of trying to rebuild to Spartans' image as an elite program by committing to some younger, but very highly regarded players. Last year, the Spartans received early commitments from top '97s Zach Osburn and Nick Boka, and the year prior, MIchigan State received commitments from '96s Marcel Godbout and Josh Jacobs.
