Northern Michigan Fires Walt Kyle

Northern Michigan University has announced it will not renew the contract of the school’s hockey coach, Walt Kyle.

Kyle had been the head coach at NMU for the past 15 seasons, compiling a record of 265-263-68. The Wildcats made the NCAA Tournament just once, during the 2009-10 season, during his tenure in Marquette. He took over for Rick Comley, who left to take the head coaching position at Michigan State, prior to the 2002-03 season.

Northern Michigan finished the 2016-17 season with a record of 13-22-4. The Wildcats bowed out of the WCHA Tournament in the quarterfinals last weekend, losing to Bemidji State in three games.
