WCHA Ref Butch Mousseaux in Critical Condition After Fall

Matt Christians

Yesterday prior to the second WCHA Final Five semifinal between Michigan Tech and Ferris State, WCHA official Butch Mousseaux slipped on the ice during warm-ups and hit his head on the ice.

This morning, the WCHA released this official statement on Mousseaux:

Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) referee Oliver "Butch" Mousseaux sustained head injuries stemming from a fall to the ice during warm-ups prior to the second WCHA Final Five semifinal game of Friday, March 18 at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was transported to Mercy Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he remains in critical condition.

Our thoughts, prayers and best wishes are with Butch, his wife, children and family during this difficult time.

We thank the staff and on-site medical personnel at the Van Andel Arena for their immediate response and action.

Our thoughts are with Mousseaux, who is a long-time official and linesman with the WCHA, and one of the most respected officials in the game.

A Facebook group has been set up in support of Butch, which includes a link to a GoFundMe page to support his medical expenses and recovery.
