Northern Michigan travel to Penn State for a non-conference series this weekend, but head coach Walt Kyle won't be making the trip. Kyle was placed on administrative leave by the university.
Details are still scarce, as NMU athletic director Forrest Karr declined to comment on the situation, stating that it was a personnel issue. Northern Michigan also placed an Associate Director of Athletics Bridget Berube Carter on administrative leave, though it's not known if Berube Carter's leave is related to Kyle's leave. It is worth noting, however, that among Berube Carter's primary duties is NCAA compliance. That would potentially be a hot button issue with Karr, who was AD at Alaska-Fairbanks during the time period in which the Nanooks had a number of players fall out of NCAA compliance, subsequently leading to harsh NCAA penalties.
