Michigan Tech will host Michigan this weekend, in what is shaping up to be a special weekend of hockey.
This will be the first trip by the Wolverines to Houghton since 1983-84, when both teams were members of the CCHA. If that feels like a long time ago, it's been even longer since the Huskies have had a team look as good as this year's squad does. Michigan Tech is 4-0-0-- 1982-93 was the last Michigan Tech team to win more than 20 games--with a pair of road victories at Ferris State. They're ranked 17th in the country and look like they could compete for an NCAA tournament bid, which would be the school's first NCAA tournament appearance since 1980-01.
To add to this weekend's excitement, there will be quite a display of hockey history at Michigan Tech's John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. In the building on Friday night will be the Stanley Cup, the MacNaughton Cup, the Gibson Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy, and the Hart Trophy. The Stanley Cup, MacNaughton Cup, and Gibson Cup are the three oldest trophies awarded in American hockey.
