Bowling Green sophomore defenseman Ralfs Freibergs has been named to the Latvian roster for the upcoming Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. He will be the only current NCAA player to play in the Games.
Freibergs will miss much of the month of February to play in the Olympics, but his departure for Sochi will come at a relatively good time for the Falcons. Bowling Green is idle the weekend of February 6/7, before traveling to Alaska-Anchorage the next weekend. The following weekend of the 20th/21st, the Falcons are off again, with only an exhibition against the NTDP U18 team, meaning the pair of games in Anchorage are likely the only two he will miss.
Freibergs is a quarterback on the Bowling Green power play and is by far the Falcons' top-scoring defenseman. He's third on team scoring with one goal and 15 assists on the season, with half of his points coming via the power play. Last season, Freibergs scored 7 points in 8 games for Bowling Green after being forced to sit out most of the season due to an NCAA suspension for playing against pros while growing up in Euripe.
The only other Latvian playing in the NCAA, Minnesota State's Teddy Blueger, was not selected to the Latvian roster.
