Bowling Green skated to their first victory of the season tonight over Ohio State by a score of 4-3 in front of a pretty decent sized crowd at the BGSU Ice Arena in the Falcons home opener.
Ohio State looked as though they would be the ones to cruise to their first victory of the season when Darik Angeli put the Buckeyes up 3-0 just past the midway point of the game at 10:03 of the second period. The Falcons would begin to claw their way back however. Bryce Williamson responded with a goal 1:55 later, and Ben Murphy would add a power play tally before the end of the second period to cut Ohio State's lead to one heading into the final period.
A quick start to the third period by Bowling Green led to Connor Kuchera picking up the game-tying goal, and just 23 seconds later, Ben Murphy added his second power play goal of the game in what would stand up as the game-winning goal.
Bowling Green moves to 1-1-1 on the season after losing and tying Union this past weekend, while the Buckeyes remain winless at 0-3-0 on the season.
Bowling Green's win is a big one for the WCHA. While Ohio State looks destined to struggle this year, the WCHA will take any win over a major conference opponent that they can get at this point. But more importantly, this could be a very big win for Bowling Green's program. The Falcons are looking to take a big step forward this year, and a big comeback win against a rival--and a team they hadn't beaten in regulation since 2008--should help build some excitement around a program that has slowly been building itself back up since hitting rock bottom a few years ago, when the future of the team was in serious jeopardy.
