The third period of Minnesota's 5-2 win over Wisconsin on Saturday featured a few after the whistle shenanigans and 90 minutes of penalties. It culminated in the final minute with Badgers defenseman Eddie Wittchow leaping in to hit Minnesota freshman forward Leon Bristedt. The hit sparked a brawl featuring every player on the ice besides Gopher goalie Adam Wilcox and ended with Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel trying to get Brady Skjei with a rear naked choke.
Wittchow received a five minute major for contact to the head and a game disqualification, meaning he'll miss Wisconsin's home game Friday against Michigan.
Minnesota junior defenseman Mike Reilly, who flew in first to take on Wittchow, received a game misconduct in addition to a contact to the head major. It also was a surprise to his older brother.
"I loved the way that we backed each other up and stuck together as a team," said Connor Reilly, who scored his team-leading 11th of the season Saturday. "It's good to see (Mike) get in there and all the guys just sticking up for each other. It shows we care for each other."
The good news is that Bristedt is initially okay. Minnesota head coach Don Lucia didn't specifically address his status, but said after the game that everyone on his team was healthy.
