The No. 12 UMass Lowell River Hawks created a four-way tie atop the Hockey East standings with a 4-2 win at Boston College. Down the road, Boston University dropped a lengthy home winning streak at Agganis Arena with an emphatic victory over Merrimack.

UMass Lowell 4, Boston College 2

The No. 12 River Hawks created a four-way tie atop the league standings with a 4-2 win over the No. 4 Boston College Eagles at Conte Forum, salvaging the final game of the season series after two losses in a home-and-home set back in October. Entering a crucial weekend series this weekend with regional rival Merrimack, UML brings in a five-game winning streak, which dates back to a Super Bowl Sunday loss at Maine. The sides went forward and back in the opening stanza, combining for three goals and giving the River Hawks a 2-1 edge at the stanza's conclusion. For the third game in a row, sophomore Scott Wilson opened UML's scoring at the 10:41 mark with a power-play goal, while junior Josh Holmstrom answered a goal from BC's Bill Arnold in less than 30 seconds. After a scoreless second, Arnold knotted the score with a power-play strike at 8:40 of the third for a 2-2 game, but rookie Christian Folin and senior Riley Wetmore put things on ice in the final five minutes. Despite defeat, Boston College has won 84.5 percent of its games played after Feb. 1 over the last four seasons as it sports a 49-6-3 record in that stretch, with two of those losses coming this season. Additionally, the Eagles fell to 8-2 in their last ten head-to-head contests between the teams. BC returns to action at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. on Friday.

Boston University 5, Merrimack 2

After suffering a very disappointing sweep at the hands of UMass Lowell this past weekend, the No. 19 Boston University Terriers unloaded their frustrations on the No. 17 Merrimack Warriors, to the tune of a 5-2 victory on Tuesday night at Agganis Arena - the 100th all-time contest between the sides. With the victory, the Terriers earned their 12th Hockey East victory of the season and won for the first time at home since a Jan. 4 overtime win over RPI. By virtue of a 3-1 win on Nov. 9, 2012 and a 4-1 decision on Jan. 11, BU also swept the season series from the Warriors and extended their winning streak in the all-time count to five games in a row since Jan. 6, 2012. Historically, BU has now won 13 of the last 17 games between the teams at Agganis Arena, but fell short of their 12th all-time shutout in the series. BU started the night fast and furious with three goals in the first period, including the game-winner from sophomore Cason Hohmann at 15:41. The period marked the first Merrimack allowed three over the first 20 minutes since Oct. 20, 2012 at Alaska. After junior Matt Nieto found the back of the net on each of BU's first two shots on net in the second period, the Warriors came back with two of their own in the third period as junior Jordan Heywood scored a pair on Matt O'Connor (32 saves) within less than two minutes in the middle stages. The loss was MC's first in exactly a month as it fell by a 6-2 count at New Hampshire on Jan. 26. The Warriors hit the ice again on Friday at UMass Lowell's Tsongas Center, while BU faces Vermont twice this weekend at home.

The league and national ramifications are especially significant for Merrimack tonight as the Warriors travel to Boston University for a big game against the Terriers.

Two rescheduled Hockey East contests will be played Tuesday night in Boston, and there will be no shortage of urgency at both arenas. UMass-Lowell travels to Chestnut Hill to take on Boston College while Merrimack visits Agganis Arena for a match-up with Boston University.

There will be significant ramifications in both the Hockey East standings, as well as the Pairwise Rankings for all the teams involved. That is especially the case for Merrimack as a win could push them back up to 19th in the Pairwise, but a loss could send them plummeting to 29th.

The Warriors have lost twice already to BU this season so this will be a tough test. However, the Terriers are not playing as well as they did when the two teams met earlier in the year. Merrimack must put a lot of pressure on BU's transition game and challenge the Terriers on the forecheck. BU has been mistake prone lately. If Merrimack can rattle the nerves and create pressure it could result in turnovers. Outside of Mike Collins, Merrimack lacks finishers. Even as hot as Shawn Bates has been lately, he creates a lot more chances than he finishes. Mark Dennehy's team must take advantage of opportunities. Another key for Merrimack is to avoid mental errors themselves. Both BC goals on Sunday were caused by a defenseman pinching and failing to get back. The overtime game winner was a direct result of a defenseman pinching. The third man for BC on the ensuing rush was left open. That allowed BC's Quinn Smith to bury the game winner.

BU must score early. As Jack Parker has said a few times over the past month, his team is gripping their sticks too tight. They are afraid of making the wrong play or unsure of what to do with the puck. If BU can use their superior skill to jump out to an early lead, that will bode well for their chance at picking up two points tonight. Another key is to limit the amount of time on the penalty kill and time in the defensive zone. BU is shorthanded when it comes to blue liners as injuries and suspensions have taken a toll.

Switching gears to the game over at Conte Forum, both UMass-Lowell and BC come in on a high note. The River Hawks swept BU over the weekend to win all three of the games in the season series. BC exacted some revenge by downing Merrimack in overtime, just over a week after being handed the same fate by the Warriors.

BC will welcome back the services of junior Kevin Hayes who will add size and help the depth up front. The Chicago draft pick will play with determination after his three game suspension. Steven Whitney has been hot, scoring 10 goals on his last 10 games. Johnny Gaudreau has been relatively silent of late.

The keys to victory for UMass-Lowell is riding a hot freshman goaltender. Connor Hellebuyck has been terrific and is now fully healthy again. The offense really seems to be clicking and generating great puck movement as evidenced by their total territorial dominance of BU Saturday night.

With huge league and national ramifications tonight, these two games should be great showcases of what Hockey East has to offer. Expect two tight games that could be decided in the final minutes.

BU coach Jack Parker was not dissatisfied with his team's effort after being swept by Lowell, but quipped that his players are gripping their sticks too tight.

UMass-Lowell was the big winner in Hockey East this weekend as the River Hawks swept Boston University in a home-and-home series. UML shutout BU through two periods before eventually giving up the only goal of the weekend while shorthanded in the third period Saturday night. Scott Wilson, Derek Arnold and Joseph Pendenza are getting hot at the right time. UML looked like the faster team and certainly played with more desire.

BU coach Jack Parker continues to talk about his team playing scared and "gripping their sticks too tight." Another issue for BU has been the recurring theme of turnovers and costly mental errors. After Tuesday night's clash with Merrimack, the Terriers do have an easier schedule with three home games and all four against UVM and Northeastern.

Providence also picked up four points on the weekend, albeit against a lesser opponent. The Friars swept last place Northeastern with ease. Stefan Demopoulos had two goals and three assists Friday night as the first line with Mark Jankowski, Tim Schaller and Demopoulos had a big game. Along with Ross Mauermann and Derek Army, the offense will need to pick up the pace to be a factor deep in March.

Northeastern is now three points in back of Maine and four in back of UMass for the final playoff spot. With the Huskies traveling to Orono this weekend, less than three points might spell doom for their chances at the post-season. It certainly would not be a good start to the Jim Madigan era, missing the league playoffs two years in a row. Goaltending issues continue to be the crux of their problems.

New Hampshire picked up three important points in Burlington as the Wildcats look to take advantage of their late season schedule. UNH plays the last four at home against UMass and Maine. Dick Umile's club needs to finish the chances they get and avoid turnovers. The Wildcats defense is very good at moving the puck up ice in transition, but defending their own cage is not their strength.

Vermont's late season schedule of death might not cost them a playoff spot, but the Catamounts will have to do some serious scoreboard watching. UVM is three points up on ninth place Maine, but has a much harder schedule with BU and BC on the horizon.

UMass split with Maine to stay one point ahead in the race for the final playoff spot. Sophomore goaltender Kevin Boyle was yanked Friday night after giving up two goals. The offense has started to pick it up, but inconsistent goaltending will be a sour note when coach John Micheletto looks back at how his first season went in Amherst.

Maine shutout the aforementioned Minutemen Friday night, but a lackluster third period Saturday prevented more than two points on the weekend. Maine had rallied from being down 2-0 to tie UMass after two, but gave up three goals in the final period to lose 5-2. Maine has a much easier weekend than UVM and UMass this weekend. There is no excuse for not taking at least three points from a depleted Northeastern squad on senior weekend in Orono.

In the marquee game of the weekend on national television, Boston College and Merrimack lived up to the hype. It was an exciting game, won by the Eagles 2-1 in overtime. Merrimack controlled much of the play, but lacks finishers. A lot of the shots on goal were from the perimeter, and the few breakaway opportunities they had never showed a serious chance of going in. The inability to finish plays and the lack of chances in tight will be Merrimack's achilles heal.

For BC, after a rough stretch in January the Eagles only lost once in February, a 2-1 overtime loss to Merrimack last weekend. Steven Whitney is red hot with ten goals in his last ten games. Johnny Gaudreau has not fared as well since being separated from Whitney. Smart money is still on BC making it deep into the playoffs, but the lack of depth will come down to hurt the Eagles if they have to face a team like Minnesota in the NCAAs.

Sophomore Quinn Smith posted the overtime game-winner at 2:23 as the No. 4 Boston College Eagles earned a 2-1 victory over Merrimack on Sunday afternoon at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass.

Boston College 2, Merrimack 1 (OT)

At a sold-out Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass., the No. 4 Boston College Eagles posted a key 2-1 overtime victory over the No. 17 Merrimack Warriors to jump back into a first-place tie with New Hampshire in the Hockey East league standings with 28 points. Sophomore Quinn Smith scored the winning goal with 2:37 remaining in the extra session as he pounced on a rebound in front of Merrimack sophomore Sam Marotta (26 saves) to secure the win and give the Eagles a crucial season series victory in league play, by virtue of a 4-3 win on Nov. 16, 2012 in Chestnut Hill. The Fairfield, Conn. native, Smith has been on a tear of later as he has posted all nine of his points, including six goals, over the last nine games. BC took a 1-0 lead at the 6:32 mark as senior alternate captain Steven Whitney took a feed from junior Bill Arnold for the game's first goal and his 20th of the season to lead the offense, but Warrior junior Shawn Bates equalized just over six minutes later with a power-play strike off assists from rookies Ben Bahe and Vinny Scotti. With the win, the Eagles avenged their loss to the Warriors last Friday that saw sophomore Connor Toomey of the Warriors score the game-winner to take over first place in the conference at the time, marking the latest MC had held the lead into a Hockey East season. BC senior Parker Milner made 43 saves in the contest, but kept the Eagles in a deadlocked as he stopped sophomore Josh Myers on a breakaway and a second-chance opportunity around the 12-minute mark. Milner, a Pittsburgh, Pa. native, has eclipsed the 30-save plateau nine times this year. Both teams return to action on Tuesday as BC hosts UMass-Lowell and Merrimack travels to Boston University's Agganis Arena.

Following Saturday's games, New Hampshire and Providence sit in a tie atop the Hockey East league standings, while Merrimack and Boston College sit just points behind heading into a key Sunday match at Lawler Arena.

UMass Lowell 3, Boston University 1

The No. 12 River Hawks completed their first weekend sweep of No. 13/15 BU since the 2000-01 season with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center, dropping the Terriers to an even .500 on the year at 14-14-2. Junior Joseph Pendenza posted a goal and an assist for the second night in a row, including the closing strike at 12:05 of the final period, following up BU's lone goal of the weekend as sophomore Evan Rodrigues scored shorthanded at 8:25 of the third to bring the game within one. Sophomore Scott Wilson and junior Chad Ruhwedel each had goals for the River Hawks as they sprung their fourth victory in as many games. BU would get no closer than after Rodrigues' goal as rookie Connor Hellebuyck made 15 saves to pick up his tenth straight win and of the season overall. BU returns to the confines of Agganis Arena, where it has struggled with four losses and a tie in five games, on Tuesday against Merrimack, while Lowell is also in action at Boston College on Tuesday.

Providence 3, Northeastern 2

The Huskies also dropped their first season series to the Friars by a sweep since the 2000-01 season as they dropped a one-goal decision at Matthews Arena, coming much closer than a pair of previous 6-2 wins in November and on Friday at Providence. The Friars are now unbeaten in seven consecutive games (3-0-4) for the first time since 2003 as sophomore Steven Shamanski found the back of the net on a shorthanded break at 9:10 of the final frame. With that goal surrendered, the Huskies became the final team in Hockey East to give up a shorthanded goal, after finishing last season among the country's worst units in that department. For NU, sophomore defender Josh Manson scored the third goal of his career and in as many games in the third period, to extend his career-best point streak just 20 seconds later. Rookie Jon Gillies was outstanding in the PC goal as he made double-digit saves in the final two periods for a total of 32 in the contest. The Huskies will leave their home winless streak behind next weekend in Maine for their only two-game trip this season, while PC splits home-and-home with Boston College.

Massachusetts 5, Maine 2

UMass scored three times in the third period and four Minuteman skaters posted multi-point performances in a 5-2 defeat of Maine at Mullins Center. Juniors Conor Sheary and Branden Gracel posted a goal and an assist apiece, while senior Rocco Carzo and junior Joel Hanley each had a pair of helpers to help balance the offense and help the Mass Attack to their 11th win of the season and 8th in Hockey East play. The Black Bears beat sophomore Steve Mastalerz (23 saves) for their lone scores of the game in the second period as sophomore Jake Rutt and rookie Bill Norman found the back of the net. With the win, the teams trade spots to close the weekend as the Minutemen jumped up for the eighth and final playoff spot and evened the season series between the teams, 1-1-1.

New Hampshire 1, Vermont 1 (OT)

UVM sophomore Jacob Fallon and UNH counterpart Trevor van Reimsdyk each posted goals in the second period to account for all the offense on their respective sides in a stalemate to close the weekend series at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Sophomore Casey DeSmith turned aside 30 shots, including double-digits in the final two periods, while van Reimsdyk scored the squaring goal at 8:53 of the middle stanza to help the 'Cats to a tie and a very important weekend series win that propelled them into a first-place tie. UNH averages roughly 35 shots on goal per-game, but managed just 45 over the two weekend games as rookie Brody Hoffman made 21 saves in his fifth tie of the year. UNH, which will play its final four games at home, returns to action next weekend for a set with rival UMass at Whittemore Center, while UVM hits the road for the final time this season to take on Boston University beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Providence Friars and Northeastern Huskies went back and forth over the first two periods on Saturday night at Matthews Arena in Boston, but the visitors had the last laugh and took the season series via a three-game clean sweep with a 3-2 victory.

BOSTON -- The Providence Friars and Northeastern Huskies went back and forth over the first two periods on Saturday night at Matthews Arena in Boston, but the visitors had the last laugh and took the season series via a three-game clean sweep with a 3-2 victory.

"I thought it was a very good hockey game," Providence head coach Nate Leaman said after his team won back-to-back games for the fourth time this year after clinching a playoff spot for the second consecutive season on Friday. "It was a real gutsy performance from both teams...For us, I am very pleased with the performance on the road, but now it's just the next game."

With the loss, the Huskies extended their winless streak at home to ten games (0-8-2) as they have not earned a victory since Nov. 11 against Alabama-Huntsville.

PC cushioned their lead to 3-1 at the 9:10 mark of the final stanza when NU's Vinny Saponari and Colton Saucerman bumped at center ice, sending the Friar junior from Manitoba alone into the offensive zone for a shorthanded breakaway and his second goal of the season. His only other goal this year, which was just the fourth of his career, came in the second period of Friday night's 6-2 win at Schneider.

"I just got lucky," Shamanski said of the play. "I think one of their forwards tripped up and kind of ran into one of the other guys, so I had a lot of time...It's not too often I get a breakaway."

On the play, Saucerman suffered a minor injury and is now considered "day-to-day," along with rookie forward Kevin Roy, according to Madigan.

After Shamanski's second goal in as many games, Northeastern wasted all of 20 seconds answering the bell as sophomore Josh Manson banked a loose puck off PC's Jon Gillies (32 saves) from the side of the crease for his third goal of his career and in as many contests for the Huskies, off an assist from rookie Dustin Darou.

By virtue of Friday's contest, the Friars already clinched the season series victory from the Huskies for the first time since 2007-08 but clinched their first three-game winning streak in the all-time series since Feb. 2, 2001.

"I am extremely pleased with the three wins over this team," Leaman concluded. "I think they are a good hockey team and we have a lot of respect for them. I thought they came up with a gutsy performance even though they were shorthanded."

With 1:01 left, head coach Jim Madigan opted to pull senior goaltender Chris Rawlings (36 saves) in favor of an extra skater, but could not find the back of the net.

"I thought our effort was very good," NU head coach Jim Madigan stated after his Huskies fell to 2-6-0 to finish February. "I thought our kids played hard and we executed well...Our guys gave it everything they had but just couldn't find a way to get the tying goal. If we get this same effort going into a big weekend series in Maine [to help us back into the playoff hunt], then I like our chances."

Huskies captain Vinny Saponari knotted things up at 1-1 at the 4:14 mark of the second period as he took the feed from junior Cody Ferriero and unleashed a wicked slapper past PC freshman Jon Gillies for his sixth goal of the season. The goal was created as the Essex, Mass. native burst from the penalty box after serving a holding call.

Providence was quick to jump back ahead as sophomore Ross Mauermann beat NU's Chris Rawlings between the wickets from a very bad angle near the goal line - his tenth strike of the season.

NU had its best chance to re-tie the game with 6:15 left in the stanza as rookie Mike McMurtry, who was placed into the top-line right wing spot in the "precautionary" absence of freshman classmate Kevin Roy, walked to the front of the net and was stopped on a backhander by Gillies.

Before NU would break the stretch, the Friars would take a 1-0 lead at the 7:55 mark as freshman Kevin Rooney, a Canton, Mass. native and Berkshire School product, found sophomore Drew Brown with a chip pass across the crease for the one-time score and his fourth goal of the season. However, the marker was the first since a 3-2 win at Merrimack on Nov. 30, 2012.

The Friars had a great opportunity in transition with just over five minutes remaining in the period as junior Kevin Hart picked the top right corner of the net on NU senior Chris Rawlings, but rung his shot off the crossbar before deflecting into the balcony at Matthews.
