The University of Denver announced on Wednesday that top forward Dylan Gambrell will be out 4-6 weeks with an undisclosed upper body injury that happened earlier this month.
The loss of Gambrell is a huge one for the Pioneers. He was Denver’s top returning scorer with 17 goals and 30 assists last year and the lone returning member of last year’s ‘Pacific Rim’ line with Trevor Moore and Danton Heinen that helped carry the Pioneers to the Frozen Four. Gambrell was selected in the second round of last summer’s NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks, and was a preseason All-NCHC team member.
Gambrell did skate for the Pioneers last weekend, when they suffered a pair of losses in the Icebreaker Invitational to Ohio State and Boston College, registering one assist on the weekend.
The Pioneers will take on second-ranked Boston University this weekend, and Michigan State the following weekend before beginning NCHC play. The 4-6 week timeline for Gambrell puts his return right on the bubble to make Denver’s November 11-12 road series against defending national champion North Dakota.
