St. Cloud State assistant coach Mike Gibbons underwent hamstring surgery recently after injuring himself in a water-skiing accident over the summer. Recovery from that surgery will keep him off the ice for an extended period of time. As a result, the Huskies are taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows a team to hire an additional coach on a provisional basis by hiring Kurt Kleinedorst, according to a report from Mick Hatten of the St. Cloud Times.
Kleinendorst will handle all on-ice duties for Gibbons during the duration of Gibbons' recovery though will not be allowed to recruit for St. Cloud State.
Kleinendorst's 25-year coaching career includes a one-year stop in college hockey when he served as head coach at Alabama-Huntsville in 2012-2013 where he led the Chargers to a 3-21-1 record. After leaving Huntsville, he was head coach of the AHL's Iowa Wild for one full season prior to being fired early in his second season.
