Buffalo Sabres prospect Philip Nyberg will join the University of Connecticut hockey team for the second semester, according to sources.

The 1997-born right-shot defenseman from Karlskrona, Sweden was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 NHL Draft. He had two goals and seven assists in 25 games played for the Madison Capitols of the USHL this fall, his first season competing in North America.

Nyberg will add a physical element to the Huskies’ blue line. He flipped his commitment from Wisconsin earlier this month.

Mike Cavanaugh’s team enters the Christmas break with a record of 6-6-6 overall and 4-3-2 in Hockey East play. UConn has a solid resume, including road wins at Notre Dame, Boston University and UMass Lowell. The Huskies return to action against St. Cloud State in the first round of the Desert Hockey Classic on Dec. 30.
