LOWELL, Mass. -- Good evening and welcome inside Paul E. Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell where the No. 8 River Hawks are set to host Division 1 newcomer Arizona State for the second straight night, concluding a weekend series. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. on this Saturday night.
Ryan Stevens' third goal of the season lifted the visitors to a 1-0 lead just 5:16 into last night's series opener, but UML responded just 23 seconds later as senior Adam Chapie became the first of four different River Hawk goal scorers in a 4-1 victory.
The win was Lowell's second straight and fifth in six games. The River Hawks split a Hockey East home-and-home set with Providence last weekend and now sits a point behind Boston College for the league's top spot.
Chapie's team-leading 11th goal of the season preceded junior Evan Campbell and senior captain A.J. White also finding the back of the net before the first period buzzer sounded. Sophomore C.J. Smith added his tenth of the year in the second frame, while freshman Christoffer Hernberg totaled 19 saves in his first collegiate start.
The Sun Devils swept ACHA powerhouse Ohio in an exhibition series in Tempe last weekend, but had been shutout in four consecutive NCAA games before scoring to take the lead last night. Rochester, N.Y., native freshman Jordan Masters leads ASU with eight goals and 19 points in 23 overall games.
Rookie classmate Ryland Pashovitz ― a former standout for the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers ― has earned four of the team's five NCAA wins (one over Alaska, two over D-II Southern New Hampshire, and two over Lake Superior State) while starting 15 of 25 total contests.
