Hockey East's implementation of a best-of-three first round before the quarterfinals in the league's post-season tournament worked to perfection. Notre Dame and UMass set an NCAA record for longest game ever, Merrimack upset Northeastern on two overtime victories and Maine and Vermont's series went to overtime in the third game.

Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna can only hope the quarterfinals provide as much drama and excitement as the opening round.
