Lowell, Mass. -- Notre Dame scored three times in the third period to erase a one-goal deficit and win, 4-2, at UMass Lowell and force a decisive game three in the Hockey East quarterfinal series.
Joe Gambardella and Evan Campbell had scored power play goals in the first and second period, respectively, for Lowell, sandwiching a Sam Herr tally for the Fighting Irish.
Facing elimination and the end of its season, Notre Dame scored three times in the final 20 minutes. Mario Lucia fed Anders Bjork to tie the score 4:43 into the period. Lucia's power play goal with 9:30 left stood up as the game-winner. Peter Schneider added an empty-net insurance goal for the visitors.
The two teams will he back at the Tsongas Center ice for the rubber match on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. Saturday's win was the first ever victory over UMass Lowell for the Fighting Irish program.
