Hockey East announced Thursday morning that the league had extended the contract of Commissioner Joe Bertagna through the 2016-17 season. The former Harvard goaltender and former head man of ECAC Hockey has been the Hockey East commissioner since the 1997-98 season.

"Joe's career and dedication to college hockey, not only within our conference but throughout the nation, have helped develop an evolving game and had a positive impact on countless student-athletes and institutions," said Will Biberstein, the Chair of the Executive Committee of Hockey East, in a press release.

Everyone around college hockey wants the sport to be more recognized and given more media attention, and no commissioner has done a better job at that than Bertagna and his staff that has included Pete Souris, now at UMass Lowell, and Brian Smith as media relations directors.
