Shane Luke had a goal and an assist on Monday evening as Providence College captured the Catamount Cup with a 3-0 shutout win over the host University of Vermont. Luke, who had two assists in the team's 4-1 win the night before over Massachusetts, was named the MVP of the tournament.
Luke's power play goal with 7:17 to play in the second period proved to be the difference as Jon Gillies shut the door on UVM with 29 saves for his 13th career shutout. Nick Saracino scored an insurance tally just a few minutes later and Noel Acciari added to the Providence lead 58 seconds into the third period.
Brian Pinho, Mark Jankowski, Brandon Tanev and Trevor Mingoia scored goals in Providence's 4-1 win over UMass the night before. Gillies stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced against the Minutemen.
Since Nov. 1 Providence has allowed just 13 total goals in 13 games played. The Friars have blanked their opponents five times during that stretch, four of which can be credited to Gillies. Sophomore backup goaltender Nick Ellis picked up one of the shutouts. Nate Leaman's team is 10-3-0 since the calendar turned to November after going 1-3-1 in the month of October.
Providence returns to action this weekend with a Saturday-Sunday home series against Colorado College, a NCHC team in rebuild mode under first year head coach Mike Haviland.
