Providence, RI -- The Huskies and the Friars will meet for a second time in just over a month tonight at Schneider Arena on the campus of Providence College. Northeastern jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first meeting of the season between the two teams on Dec. 6 at Matthews Arena, but Providence roared back with three consecutive goals in the third period.
Jon Gillies will get his first start in net for the Friars since that game after missing four contests while at the World Junior Championship in Sweden. The Calgary Flames prospect was the starting goaltender for the United States team that lost to Russia in the quarterfinal.
Providence tied Merrimack, 1-1, in the first of two games at Fenway Park on Saturday. Nate Leaman's team had lost to Air Force, 3-2, in the Ledyard Bank Classic championship game.
Clay Witt gets the nod for the Huskies after Jim Madigan gave Derick Roy an opportunity to start in the Ledyard Bank Classic consolation game. Northeastern gave up 13 goals in the tournament, including eight in a wild 8-8 consolation game tie. Witt was the goaltender of record the previous night in a loss to Air Force, the eventual tournament champion.
