Providence vs. Northeastern score update: Friars dominate, finish first period with 1-0 lead

BOSTON -- The Providence Friars dominated the opening half of the first period and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission over the host Northeastern Huskies at Matthews Arena on Saturday night.

The Huskies allowed the first ten shots of the game before recording one of their own just over eight minutes into the contest.Through that streak, Providence maintained long intervals of offense, while pinning Northeastern into its defensive zone. Overall in the frame, the Friars held a 14-9 shots on goal advantage.

Before NU would break the stretch, the Friars would take a 1-0 lead at the 7:55 mark as freshman Kevin Rooney, a Canton, Mass. native and Berkshire School product, found sophomore Drew Brown with a chip pass across the crease for the one-time score and his fourth goal of the season. However, the marker was the first since a 3-2 win at Merrimack on Nov. 30, 2012.

The Friars had a great opportunity in transition with just over five minutes remaining in the period as junior Kevin Hart picked the top right corner of the net on NU senior Chris Rawlings, but rung his shot off the crossbar before deflecting into the balcony at Matthews.
