Jerry York's Milestone Victories

Born in Watertown, Mass., Jerry York went to BC High, then onto Boston College where he graduated in 1967.

The soft-spoken York began his stellar coaching career as an assistant at Clarkson under Len Ceglarski. York took over the head reins at Clarkson when Ceglarski left to take the BC coaching job. After seven years guiding Clarkson, York moved on to Bowling Green where he would stay for 15 seasons. In 1994, he returned to his alma mater where the York legacy will be most remembered.

Here is a look at some of York's historic and milestone victories along the way:

October 1972: Coaching in his first game as a head coach, York guides the Clarkson Golden Knights to a 13-0 exhibition win over University of Quebec. A week later, York notches his first career win against an NCAA opponent with a 4-2 triumph over Norwich.

1976-77 Season: Jerry York coaches Clarkson to a 26-win season and the regular season championship in the ECAC and is rewarded by being named the Spencer Penrose Award winner as the American Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

1977-78: In York's next to last year at Clarkson, he picks up his 100th career coaching victory in a blowout against arch-rival St. Lawrence. The Clarkson Golden Knights won the contest 10-3.

1979-80: York begins his tenure at Bowling Green State, a CCHA member.

1982-83: On January 15, 1983, York wins his 200th game, a 4-0 victory over CCHA rival Western Michigan. The York-led Bowling Green 28-win campaign ended with a 4-3 overtime loss to Michigan State in the CCHA Championship game.

1983-84: Bowling Green wins its first and only NCAA Championship, defeating Minnesota-Duluth 5-4 in quadruple overtime. York guided the Falcons to 34 wins in this historic season.

1986-87: On November 7, 1986, Jerry York won his 300th game, a 5-2 victory over in-state rival Ohio State. The Falcons would win the CCHA Regular Season Championship that season, but fell short in the CCHA Championship game and then lost to Harvard in the NCAA Tournament.

1989-90: On February 3, 1990, York won his 400th game in a 4-3 victory over cross-state rival Miami. Bowling Green's 25-win season ended in an NCAA Tournament ouster at the hands of Maine. That would be York's last trip to the NCAA Tournament while at Bowling Green.

1994-95: Jerry York begins his tenure at his alma mater, BC. The Eagles struggle, only winning 11 games in his first season. It would take a few seasons for York to get the train rolling in the right direction.

1996-97: York wins his 500th career game on November 30, 1996, a 6-4 home win over St. Lawrence. This was the last of the down years for York at BC, winning only 15 games, but the season culminated in a quarterfinal upset over Merrimack, before bowing out to New Hampshire in the Hockey East Semifinals.

1998-2000: Three near misses in the Frozen Four, including national championship game losses to Michigan ('98) and North Dakota ('00) and a semifinal loss to Maine in 1999.

2000-2001: York and BC break through, winning the school's first national championship since 1949. After three years of heartache, the senior class led by Brian Gionta delivers. In the NCAA Championship game, it was youth winning it in overtime. Krys Kolanos had the game-winning goal in overtime, assisted by Chuck Kobasew. During that season, York won his 600th game, a 6-1 shellacking of UMass-Lowell at an away game for the BC Eagles. This season would also be highlighted as the first year York had won the Beanpot as a coach, winning the semifinal round over Harvard 4-1 and then the championship game over BU 5-3.

2004-2005: York picks up his 700th win in a 5-3 home victory over non-conference nemesis North Dakota. The Eagles would fall to the Fighting Sioux later that season in the NCAA Quarterfinals

2008, 2010 and 2012: York and BC break through three more times, winning the school's third, fourth and fifth national titles. During the NCAA Tournament in 2008, York picked up career-win 800 in a 5-2 victory over Minnesota in a Northeast Regional contest at Worcester. He picked up career victory 900 on February 17, 2012, a 5-2 win over Hockey East foe Merrimack.

2012-2013: York tied Ron Mason's all-time career wins record with a victory over Boston University on December 1, 2012. After losing a late lead and settling for a tie at Providence a few days later, York finally became the sole leader in coaching victories with a 5-2 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday afternoon December 29th in the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis, MN.
