Hockey East Awards: More Goaltender Love, Merrimack Takes Home Team of the Week

Merrimack cleaned up in this week's Hockey East awards, which again saw a pair of goaltenders splitting rookie of the week honors.

Casey DeSmith took home his third straight Hockey East Defensive player of the week honors, after stopping 76 of 78 shots on the weekend and backstopping the Wildcats to a 4-0 shutout of archrival Maine on Sunday afternoon.

Jordan Heywood took home Athletic Republic Player of the week honors after scoring two goals in Merrimack's 5-2 win over Northeastern on Friday night at Matthews Arena and notching the game-winning goal and an assist in Saturday's 4-2 Warriors win over the Huskies. Merrimack has taken points in four straight conference games.

The Warriors were named team of the week for their accolades, because somebody must have gotten tired of giving BC the honor after four-point conference weekends, which the Eagles registered for the third straight week this past weekend.

The Pro Ambitions rookie of the week award was again split, this time between BU freshman goaltender Matt O'Connor and Vermont freshman netminder Brody Hoffman. O'Connor stopped 26 of 28 shots in BU's 4-2 win over North Dakota on Saturday, and Hoffman earned a shutout on Saturday night as Vermont beat Providence for their first conference win of the year.
