Hockey East Weekend Recap: BC Takes Battle of Comm Ave, Maine Gets First Win

Boston College notched two big wins against top-15 opponents, including a big road win at Boston University on Sunday afternoon.

BOSTON, MA - For the longest time, it seemed like Destry Straight's goal at :43 of the first period would hold up as the only marker in a game that turned predictably physical as it went on, but then #1 Boston College piled on and outlasted a late surge by their arch rivals Sunday evening at Agganis Arena.

Kevin Hayes (Chicago Blackhawks) netted a goal and an assist, but it was Johnny Gaudreau (Calgary Flames) who scored the game-winner just 82 seconds after Hayes' goals opened the floodgates late in the third period. Bill Arnold netted a short-handed empty net goal with just less than two minutes to go to put the game out of reach for the Eagles, who won their eighth straight game following an opening-night loss at Northeastern.

#11 BU fell to 5-3-0, losing to a ranked team for the third time on the season. Parker Milner made 25 saves and Matt O'Connor had 20 stops for the Terriers. The next installment of the Battle of Comm Ave takes place Friday, November 30th at Boston College.

at Northeastern 3, UAH 1

Nine Huskies notched points as Northeastern did away with the Chargers for the second straight night. Chris Rawlings made 24 saves to earn the win for Northeastern, which closed with three straight goals after Alabama-Huntsville opened the scoring.

The Black Bears picked up their first Hockey East victory Saturday night, defeating Lowell 4-3 at the Tsongas Center. With the loss, the Riverhawks drop to 2-4-1 overall (1-3-1 in Hockey East).

Midway through the first period, the Riverhawks opened the scoring when junior Derek Arnold beat Martin Oullette to give Lowell a 1-0 advantage. Two minutes later, Maine evened the score at one off a goal from sophomore Connor Leen.

With 2:50 left in the opening frame, senior defenseman Nick Pryor (Anaheim Ducks) scored on Dough Carr, giving the Black Bears a 2-1 lead. Classmate Kyle Beattie had the assist on the play.

Freshman Devin Shore (Dallas Stars) made the score 3-1 midway through the second, but was quickly avenged by Riley Wetmore of the Riverhawks.

The Riverhawks tied the game at three a piece 30 seconds into the final period following a goal from junior Joseph Pendenza.

It was all UNH in the first period, as two goals gave the Wildcats an early advantage. Just 5:27 into the game, sophomore Grayson Downing opened the scoring getting a shot past Brody Hoffman. Seven minutes later, the Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 off of a goal from junior defenseman Eric Knodel (Toronto Maple Leafs).

Block got things going in the second period, scoring an unassisted goal 1:27 in. The senior scored his second just 5:44 into the third period to extend UNH’s lead to 4-0. DeSmith and the Wildcats’ defense proved strong as they held Vermont off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

at Northeastern 3, Alabama-Huntsville 0

Sophomore forward Ludwig Karlsson netted two goals, leading the Huskies to a 3-0 victory over the Chargers at Matthews Arena on Saturday night. Chris Rawlings made 19 saves, earning the shutout victory.

It took the Huskies until late in the first period to get on the board against the Chargers, but two goals in the last seven minutes gave Northeastern a 2-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.

Junior forward Braden Primm got the Huskies going with 6:54 left in the opening frame. After receiving an assist from classmate Cody Ferriero (San Jose Sharks), Primm beat John Griggs for his second goal of the season.

Four minutes later, Karlsson added to the Husky lead off an assist from freshman Kevin Roy (Anaheim Ducks). The sophomore scored his second goal of the game 5:57 into the final frame to extend Northeastern’s lead to three.

UConn 3, at Merrimack 1

Senior goaltender Garrett Bartus made 30 saves, as UConn beat the hosting Warriors 3-1 Saturday night. With the loss, Merrimack has now dropped two straight games, bringing their record to 4-5-1 overall (3-3-1 in Hockey East)

Just 3:50 into the third period, the Huskies took a one goal advantage when Ambrosie beat Rasmus Tirronen to make the score 2-1. UConn added an insurance goal when Evan Carriere scored in the empty net with 18 seconds left to put the game out of hand.
