Hockey East Friday Recap: Big Wins for BC, BU and UMass

UMass Lowell began to right the ship as Boston College and Boston University notched big wins heading into Sunday afternoon's first installment of the Battle of Comm Ave.

at #1 Boston College 3, #7 Notre Dame 1

Sophomore Johnny Gaudreau (Calgary Flames) netted two goals to lead the Eagles past the Fighting Irish Friday night at Conte Forum. Senior Pat Mullane started off the scoring just 4:41 into the second period by beating Notre Dame goaltender Steven Summerhays off of an assist from Patrick Wey (Washington Capitals).

With 3:30 left in the second frame, Gaudreau added one of his own, increasing Boston College’s lead to 2-0. Notre Dame halved the Eagles lead with 12:50 left in the final period when Thomas DiPauli (Washington Capitals) beat Parker Milner. Milner finished the night with 19 saves, picking up the victory.

In a last minute effort to tie the game, Jeff Jackson called Summerhays to the bench to try and gain advantage with an extra skater. However, Jackson’s plan failed when Gaudreau scored on the empty net, providing the Eagles with an insurance goal.

#11 Boston University 3, Merrimack 1

Senior forward Wade Megan (Florida Panthers) had a goal and two helpers to lead the Terriers past Merrimack 3-1 Friday night. With the win, BU improves their record to 5-2 overall (4-1 in Hockey East). However, the loss brings the Warriors to 4-4-1 overall (3-2-1 in Hockey East).

Freshman Ahti Oksanen opened the scoring just 1:22 into the second period. Cason Hohmann and Megan received assists on the goal. Seven minutes later, Megan extended the Terrier’s lead to two after sneaking a puck between Sam Marotta’s legs.

Merrimack senior John Heffernan scored the lone goal for the Warriors 14 seconds into the third period. The goal came on the powerplay.

BU freshman goaltender Matt O’Connor picked up his fifth win, making 34 saves along the way.

at UMass 4, Providence 0

Four different players scored a goal for Amherst, as the Minutemen blew past the Friars 4-0 Friday night at the Mullins Center. After a scoreless first period, Michael Pereira scored the game winning goal 4:27 into the second frame. Three minutes later, Colin Shea extended UMass’s lead to two after beating freshman Jon Gillies for a goal.

Branden Gracel and Troy Power scored two more in the remainder of the game, as the Minutemen improved their record to 3-4 overall (2-4 in Hockey East). The loss drops the Friars to 4-4-1 overall (3-3 in Hockey East).

Sophomore Kevin Boyle improved his season record to 3-2 following the victory, making 17 saves and picking up the shutout.

at #17 Lowell 2, Maine 1

Despite scoring first, the Black Bears allowed the Riverhawks to score twice, dropping a 2-1 decision Friday night at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. With five seconds left in the opening period, freshman Ben Hutton (Vancouver Canucks) scored on Doug Carr to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

4:21 into the second frame, senior Riley Wetmore evened the game at one. A.J White and Derek Arnold were credited with the assists. Just three minutes later, the Riverhawks got another goal from Josh Holmstrom, which proved to be the game winner.

With the win, the Riverhawks improve to 2-3-1 overall and earned their first Hockey East victory, making their in league record 1-2-1. The Black Bear dropped yet another game, leaving their record 1-9 overall (0-5 in Hockey East)heading into their second game against Lowell this weekend on Saturday night.
