After a thrilling sectional championship week that saw some great hockey, 16 teams have advanced to the XCel Energy Center for the girls’ Minnesota State High School Hockey Championship.
Here is how the bracket looks for Class AA(big schools) and Class A(small schools). The Class A tournament starts on Wednesday and the Class AA tournament starts on Thursday. Game times are theoretically 11am, 1pm, 6pm, and 8pm, but the second game of each session almost never starts at that time.
Class AA
#2 Centennial vs. Lakeville South
#3 Hill-Murray vs. Eagan
#1 Edina vs. Brainerd/Little Falls
#4 Andover vs. #5 Eden Prairie
Class A
#2 Breck vs. Marshall
#3 Red Wing vs. Hermantown/Proctor
#1 Warroad vs. New Ulm
#4 Alexandria vs. #5 St. Paul United
In Class AA, Edina is the consensus favorite, having survived a sectional final against the state’s #2-ranked team in Blake. But the regular season showed that Edina and Blake weren’t quite as far ahead of the pack as expected. Second seed Centennial upset Edina during the regular season, though lost their only match-up of the season to potential semifinal opponent Hill-Murray. It should be a competitive tournament with a couple great games.
In Class A, Warroad is the favorite, while the top half of the bracket should be interesting. Red Wing, led by Ms. Hockey favorite Taylor Heise, is likely to battle against a deep Breck team in the semifinal
