Sectional tournaments started this week for girls high school hockey in the state of Minnesota, and they began with a game for the ages. In Section 3AA, the match-up between the fourth seed East Ridge and fifth seed Apple Valley went an astonishing six overtimes before East Ridge scored to win 3-2.
The star of the game was Apple Valley junior goalie Taylor DeForrest, who was unofficially credited with 112 saves in the game before giving up the game-winner.
Apple Valley High School is no stranger to long overtime games. This March will mark the 20th anniversary of the famous 5OT game between Apple Valley and Duluth in the boy's state high school tournament in which future North Dakota goalie Karl Goehring made 65 saves to help Apple Valley spring the upset.
With the win, East Ridge advances to their section semifinal where they will face top seed Eastview on February 6th.
That wasn't the only long overtime game to start the girls tournament. The game between Hastings and Burnsville also went to four overtimes, with Hastings prevailing 3-2.
