Rick Bennett has hired Mercyhurst assistant John Ronan to replace Joe Dumais as one of his two assistant coaches on the Union hockey staff, according to multiple sources. The official announcement is expected shortly.

Ronan, a 2005 Maine alum, was an assistant coach for Rick Gotkin’s Mercyhurst Lakers for the 2015-16 season after spending a year in the USHL as an assistant for the Youngstown Phantoms.

The South Boston, Mass. native was a volunteer assistant at Union during the 2013-14 season when the Dutchmen won the NCAA Championship.

Ronan captained the Black Bears as a senior in 2004-2005. He totaled 25 goals and 22 assists in 132 collegiate games. He played minor pro hockey from 2005-2012.

Ronan replaces Dumais, who left Union to take a similar position at his alma mater, Quinnipiac University. Dumais had been an assistant at Union since the 2011-12 season. Boston University alum Jason Tapp is the other assistant on Bennett’s staff.
