BRIDGEPORT, CONN. -- Attempting to make its second Frozen Four in three seasons, No. 1 Union College leads No. 3 Providence College, 1-0, after one period in the NCAA Hockey Tournament East Regional Final.
Mat Bodie's goal 2:42 into the contest gave the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead and an early jump start on the Friars. Senior Daniel Carr's pass found the trailing Bodie who ripped an absolute rocket into the top corner of the net.
Union out shot Providence, 15-7 on the period. Friars sophomore goaltender Jon Gillies made several big-time saves to keep the Dutchmen from furthering their lead.
Colin Stevens stopped all seven shots he faced for Union, but the junior goaltender was helped out by star defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere making several saves on his knees in the crease. The Philadelphia Flyers prospect clearly saved a Friars goal.
