Union Head Coach Rick Bennett Suspended Two Games for Post-Game Fight

Bennett will sit on the sidelines next weekend after attacking RPI coach Seth Appert

Union head coach Rick Bennett has been suspended two games by Union athletic director Jim McLaughlin for his role in Saturday's bench-clearing brawl at the end of the Mayor's Cup game against RPI.

Bennett will miss a pair of conference games next weekend, at St. Lawrence on Friday, and at Clarkson on Saturday.

Judging from the videos linked above, just two games may be getting off light for Bennett, assuming the ECAC doesn't add any supplemental discipline. After a fracas breaks out in the closing seconds of the game, the video shows Bennett come off the Union bench and try to go after RPI head coach Seth Appert, which re-escalated the fight going on between the two teams on the ice. Bennett then appears to go after someone else from the RPI bench, before being restrained by officials and members of his own team.

After the game, Bennett was extremely apologetic in his post-game press conference. Appert, for his part, said he had a ton of respect for Bennett, and holds no ill will towards him for the incident. The two teams aren't scheduled to meet again in the regular season, though will be in close proximity to each other next weekend, with RPI playing at Clarkson on Friday, then making the short trip to St. Lawrence the following night.
