The 2017 Road to College Showcase is slated for this weekend at Babson College’s on campus rink.
The showcase, in its ninth year, was founded by Chuck Hughes, a former player and assistant coach at Harvard. Dexter School coach Dan Donato also has a large role in putting on the event.
Its purpose is to help prepare academically inclined student-athletes to better understand the college recruiting and admission process. In addition to on-ice practices and games, there are also college essay and financial aid sessions for prospects and their parents.
While a majority of the players at the event are better suited for NESCAC and other top Division III programs, there are several players who are worthy of Division I consideration. Two of the top players set to play this weekend are forward Shane Pinto of Selects Academy at South Kent and defenseman Xavier Henry of St. Andrew’s College in Canada.
There are just six teams and games run one after another at the same rink so it's one of the easiest events to scout. Last year's showcase brought in over 40 NCAA coaches and USHL and BCHL scouts.
Practices begin Thursday with games scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. More information can be found at the showcase's website. The address for Babson Skating Rink is 150 Great Plain Avenue in Wellesley, Mass. for those attending and wishing to put into GPS.
