Gophers Hockey: Tyler Sheehy commits to Minnesota

Sheehy originally committed to Ohio State. The Burnsville, MN native and Waterloo (USHL) forward is expected to join the Gophers in 2015.

According to his Twitter, Burnsville, Minnesota native and Waterloo (USHL) forward Tyler Sheehy has committed to the University of Minnesota.

While being one of the top uncommitted players available, this isn't Sheehy's first college commitment. The 18 year-old originally committed to Ohio State back in January 2013 before deciding along with Cliff Watson (now a Michigan Tech freshman), Nolan Valleau (now a Bowling Green freshman), Zach Stepan (now a Minnesota State freshman) and Jack Dougherty (now a Wisconsin recruit) to re-open his search once the Buckeyes fired Mark Osiecki last April.

Instead, he will remain in the Big Ten with the Gophers.

Sheehy, a 5'10", 185 lbs forward, is an offensive-minded player that currently has 32 points (14G-18A) in 32 games for the Black Hawks. He opted late in the year following an outstanding Minnesota Elite League season to play in the USHL rather than return to Burnsville for his senior season. If he had, Sheehy would have been one of favorites for the Mr. Hockey Award.

The step up in competition has so far paid off for Sheehy, who is eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft. He was the 150th rated North American skater in the Central Scouting Midterm rankings last month.

When Sheehy will join Minnesota wasn't said, but it would be expected he steps foot on campus in 2015. That is a sentiment shared by Bucky's Fifth Quarter Andy Johnson, who also reported that the final decision was between Denver and Minnesota following Wisconsin's late fade.

The Gophers have 15 forwards and only two (Nate Condon and Tom Serratore) are seniors. The team has two forward recruits in Leon Bristedt and Jack Ramsey who are slated to play in 2014 although Minnesota could possibly also lose someone early to the pros. (Ramsey could possibly be moved back a year as well.) That would be Sheehy's best chance to play this fall.
