Malden Catholic sophomore forward Matt Filipe has committed to play college hockey at Northeastern University, the same school where his father played from 1978-1982. The Lynnfield, Mass. native is one of the top players in his age group in all of New England and is slated to arrive at Northeastern for the fall of 2016.

Filipe, a physically imposing player, is a powerful skater, but also has good hands. He is third on the team in scoring with eight goals and six assists.

"Matthew Filipe is the next up and coming elite player. He's a [late] '97. He's a big, strong kid who can skate. He plays a hard, mean game, but he's skilled and can finish. He competes every shift. He's going to be fun to watch the next few years," said Malden Catholic coach John McLean after a game earlier in the season.

Filipe is the third member of the Lancers team to commit to a Hockey East program joining New Hampshire recruit Ara Nazarian and UMass Lowell commit Tyler Sifferlen. The Lancers, the three-time defending state champions in Massachusetts, are once again considered a favorite to take home the trophy at the TD Garden along with BC High, Austin Prep, Catholic Memorial and Springfield Cathedral.
