The University of Connecticut hockey team appears to have a nice little pipeline going to Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in Minnesota. The Huskies landed a commitment from '99 defenseman Connor Mayer on Thursday. Mike Cavanaugh has two Benilde alums, Spencer Naas and Johnny Austin, already on his roster this season.
Mayer, considered by some to be in the top ten at his position for his age group, is an undersized defenseman who can skate extremely well and can push the puck up ice in transition. He had two goals and two assists in five games at this past July's USA Hockey Select 15 Festival.
Dating back to his days as an assistant to Jerry York at Boston College, Cavanaugh has been able to pluck some of the top recruits out of Minnesota and bring them east. It appears that trend is continuing with the help of his current assistants, Joe Pereira and Mike Souza.
