The University of Connecticut has picked up a verbal commitment from the Rivers School defenseman Miles Gendron. The Shrewsbury, Mass.native also plays for the Neponset Valley River Rats' U18 Team in split-season midget action.
Gendron is a six-foot-two offensive-minded left-shot defenseman who previously played center. He will play one more season for former Boston University star and NHL veteran Shawn MacEachern at the Rivers School, a prep school located in Weston, Mass.
The Lincoln Stars drafted Gendron in the 13th round of the 2013 USHL Draft. The plan is for Gendron to play one year of juniors after finishing up at Rivers. According to the Lincoln Stars Blog, Gendron didn't show up for the tryout camp this summer and was not protected by the team. Therefore, he will go back into the draft pool or might look to play out east in the USPHL.
The 1996-born prospect is expected to arrive in Storrs for the start of the 2015-2016 season. Gendron was also selected by the Moncton Wildcats in the 2013 QMJHL Draft, but is committed to going the college route.
UCONN is coached by longtime Boston College associate head coach Mike Cavanaugh who is entering his first season behind the bench for the Huskies. He is assisted by former UNH forward and Brown assistant Mike Souza and former BU forward Joe Pereira.
