Michigan's Michael Downing Earns Suspension for Third Game Misconduct

Matt Christians

Michigan picked up an easy 5-2 victory at home on Sunday afternoon over Ohio State. But in the win, defenseman Michael Downing picked up a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for contact to the head of Ohio State's Christian Lampasso.

Here is video of the play:

That penalty is particularly painful for Downing because it is his third game misconduct of the season, which carries along with it an automatic one-game suspension. He was also assessed game misconducts in both games of a series against Michigan Tech earlier this season. Downing will now have to sit out Michigan's next game next Friday against Wisconsin. Any additional game misconducts this season for Downing will also carry an additional one-game suspension.

This is Downing's fifth game misconduct in just under two seasons at Michigan. He also received an additional one-game suspension after one of his misconducts last season.
