Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota issued a press release on Friday that the school will host a groundbreaking ceremony on October 5th for a new ice arena, at which point they will also formally announce the creation of a new men’s Division I college hockey program.
It had been previously reported this summer that Augustana was looking at adding a D-I men’s program. With funding in place and the school ready to break ground on a new arena, it is finally official that the Vikings will be playing major college hockey, likely by 2023.
Augustana is set to become the first D-1 college hockey program in the state of South Dakota.
