RPI Cancels Fall Sports; Hockey’s Status Not Yet Determined

RPI

One of the first dominoes may have fallen with regards to the college hockey season starting on time. Today, RPI announced that their NCAA athletic programs will not participate in the Fall 2020 season.

RPI’s men’s and women’s hockey programs are technically winter sports, but with one of the longest seasons in NCAA sports, the women begin their season in late-September, while the men begin in early-October.

In their release, RPI stated that the first dates of practice and competition for men’s and women’s hockey have yet to be determined. The hockey programs are the only two Division I sports at the school, which is in Division III in their 21 other sports. That probably shouldn’t factor into a matter of student and public health, but still could sway a decision.
