All four quarterfinal match-ups went according to plan—technically Russia beating Denmark was an upset, but come on—setting up a pair of fantastic semifinals. There’s no doubt that these were the four best teams in the tournament, and arguably the four best hockey nations in the world right now.
These are the games that make the World Juniors the most thrilling hockey tournament on the planet. It should be a fantastic evening of hockey.
United States(-180) vs. Russia(+135), 3pm, NHL Network/TSN
The United States got the monkey off their back with their first win over Russia since the 2008 tournament in the preliminary round. But the United States is 0-7 all-time against the Russians in the medal round, including losses in the last three tournaments. But this US team is still undefeated in this tournament and rolling right now. This should be an incredible battle.
Canada(-140) vs. Sweden(+105), 7:30pm, NHL Network/TSN
Sweden has cruised into the semifinals of this tournament with almost no adversity en route to their perfect record. But that is about to change. Canada comes into this game with rickety goaltending, and lacking in depth a bit, but they’ll have a big, passionate home crowd on their side and it’s going to an incredible effort from Sweden to slow them down.
