St. Lawrence hockey adds Deschampes to coaching staff

Former University of Maine defenseman Matthew Deschampes has been hired as Mark Morris' second assistant at St. Lawrence.

Deschampes had been the head coach of the Red Bull Salzburg U16 team after a minor pro career that spanned several years, mostly in the ECHL. Deschampes played for the Black Bears from 2001-2005. Deschampes served as an alternate captain his senior year in Orono.

Deschampes' hiring is somewhat of an outside the box hire, but it is a good one. The Poughkeepsie, NY native has a keen eye for talent and will help the Saints on the recruiting trail.

Deschampes joins Morris and associate head coach Mike Hurlbut on the SLU staff. Morris, the former Clarkson bench boss, was hired in May to replace Greg Carvel who left for UMass.
