There will be a new champion crowned at the Hockey East Championship this weekend. Defending Lamoriello Trophy champion Boston University was knocked out in the quarterfinals by UMass Lowell.
The River Hawks, winner of the Hockey East Tournament in 2013 and 2014, will face Providence College, the defending NCAA Champion, in the first semifinal Friday at 5 p.m. The two teams split the regular season series, each winning on home ice.
In the second semifinal Boston College, looking for its 10th Lamoriello Trophy during the Jerry York era, faces red hot Northeastern. The Eagles won the regular season series between the two clubs with a win and a tie.
Five Fun Facts
- Boston College (11) has the most Hockey East Tournament Championships of any team in the league.
- Out of the four semifinalists, Northeastern (1988) is the team with the longest drought since winning a Lamoriello Trophy.
- UMass Lowell, the only state school in the semifinals, has the least amount of players (2) from Massachusetts.
- Norm Bazin, Nate Leaman and Jim Madigan have all been at their respective schools for 5 seasons, combined seven years less than York has been at BC.
- Nate Leaman is the only coach in the semifinals who isn't an alum of the school he's coaching. He played hockey at SUNY-Cortland.
