USA Hockey will bring 23 players to the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in hopes of bringing back the country’s first Gold Medal since 2013.
Wisconsin sophomore center Luke Kunin will serve as captain while Boston University sophomore defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Boston College sophomore center Colin White will be alternate captains. McAvoy and White are the only returnees from the 2016 U.S. team.
Boston University freshman Clayton Keller is the highest NHL Draft selected player on the U.S. squad. The Swansea, Ill. native was pegged by the Arizona Coyotes with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Keller and McAvoy are two of six Terriers to represent the United States. Six players on the U.S. squad from one team is tied for most all-time, joining the 1979 University of Minnesota.
Boston University freshman defenseman Chad Krys and Erie Otters (OHL) forward Alex Debrincat were two of the final cuts. Both represented the red, white and blue in the 2016 edition of the tournament. The other controversial final cut was Logan Brown, a big center from the Windsor Spitfires in the OHL. The 2016 first round pick of the Ottawa Senators was recovering from a wrist injury, which had his ability to be fully ready to go in doubt.
The United States will be led by head coach Bob Motzko, the head coach at St. Cloud State. Assistant coaches are Boston College associate head coach Greg Brown, Minnesota assistant coach Grant Potulny, Providence assistant coach Kris Mayotte and Air Force Director of Hockey Operations Steve Miller.
