Saturday marked the day that all drafted outgoing college seniors not signed to an NHL contract became free agents. The most highly-coveted of that group was Notre Dame senior defenseman Robbie Russo, who became a free agent after not signing with the New York Islanders.
The Detroit Red Wings wasted no time, announcing that they had signed Russo to a two-year entry-level contract.
Russo was the second-highest scoring defenseman in the NCAA last season, tallying 15 goals and 26 assists for 41 points. We ranked Russo as the 55th-best NHL prospect in the NCAA last season.
Russo is expected to start next season with Detroit's AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.
