It took some extra time, but eventually, Team USA took home their sixth gold medal in the past seven tournaments at the World U18 Championships by a score of 2-1 over Finland thanks to an overtime tally from Colin White.
Finland struck first, scoring on the first shift of the game at the 17 second mark. Sebastian Aho, who was added to the Finland roster for this game after his junior season ended last night fed Julius Nattinen for the goal.
From there, the United States would carry the play, but struggled to put the puck past Finnish goalie Veini Vehvilainen .
The United States finally broke through on their 39th shot of the game in the third period when Matthew Tkachuk made a brilliant no-look pass from behind the Finland goal out to Jack Roslovic, who buried a one-timer for the goal.
Neither time would score again before the end of regulation, so the game moved to overtime. Playing 4-on-4 in the extra frame, the US dominance became even more pronounced, outshooting the Finns 18-2 in overtime, and putting two shots off the cross bar. Finally, Colin White took a pass in the slot from Jeremy Bracco and scored the goal that would give the United States the gold medal.
Final shots for the game ended up 62-20 in favor of the United States. This is the second straight gold medal for the United States in the event and ninth overall. Auston Matthews was named the tournament's MVP and was the tournament's leading scorer.
