Wisconsin senior goalie Joel Rumpel has signed a one-year entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks per a release from the school.
Rumpel's statistics this year--3.49 GAA .902 save percentage--took a huge hit playing for one of the worst teams in the NCAA, but many nights, he was the only thing keeping Wisconsin from further disaster. In his junior season, playing in front of a much stronger team, he posted 2.07/.929 numbers has was named a finalist for both the Mike Richter Award for top NCAA goalie and Hobey Baker Award for top player in college hockey.
Rumpel will report to the Sharks affiliate in Worcester, Massachusetts. The one-year contract is the maximum allowable under the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, given Rumpel's age.
