This Saturday will be the ninth annual Hockey Day in Minnesota celebration put on by Fox Sports North.
The marquee event of Hockey Day has always been the day's high school games played outdoors. Past events have paid homage to the game's heritage by playing outside at historic sites like Elk River's Handke Pit or Baudette Bay on Lake of the Woods. This year, in a twist, they will pay homage to our grim militaristic future by having two exclusive private schools play on a military airstrip.
Festivities kick off at 9am Saturday morning and run until after midnight, with the usual fare of human interest stories, high school games, a game from the state's only professional team, the Minnesota Wild, and a game from the state's only Division I hockey team, I'm pretty sure, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
