St. Lawrence University hockey coach Greg Carvel has hired former Rochester Institute of Technology goaltender and Nazareth College assistant Jared DeMichiel as his new assistant coach, according to two sources. DeMichiel replaces Kris Mayotte, who left SLU last month to join Nate Leaman's coaching staff at Providence College.
DeMichiel, who will be Carvel's assistant alongside associate head coach Mike Hurlbut, played for Wayne Wilson at RIT from 2006-2010 before embarking on a brief minor pro career in the AHL and ECHL. He was an assistant at Nazareth the past two seasons, serving under former Clarkson head coach George Roll at the Division III program.
DeMichiel saved his best season for last during his collegiate career as he led RIT to its first and only appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2010. The Tigers advanced all the way to the 2010 Frozen Four at Ford Field in Detroit on the back of his performance at the East Regional, which earned him Most Outstanding Player honors. The Avon, Conn. native took home Atlantic Hockey Association Goaltender of the Year and was a AHA First Team All-Star as a senior.
