College Players At NHL Development Camps, By NHL Teams

The NHL's yin to college's yang.

If the New York Islanders are giving chances to schools, the Chicago Blackhawks are inviting everyone. 34 active or future.

Four Three schools - Bentley, Canisius, St. Lawrence and Princeton - see all of its representatives attending the Islanders' camp. (Same goes with Notre Dame's only undrafted invitee.) In fact, nearly half of Atlantic Hockey's prospect development camp invitees are.

Nearly 300 active and future players from 54 schools (53 of 59 Division 1 schools plus Chris Waterstreet of D3 Oswego State) are attending various camps running throughout the month of July.

Many of those attending are getting a chance to be coached by the teams holding their draft rights. However, more than one hundred collegians are going without being drafted. These players are invited by NHL teams and look to show and grow in front of the pros. Several undrafted free agents have made enough of an impression at these camps to be signed later in their careers.

34 of those collegians are among the nearly 60 players attending Chicago's development camp next week. Compared with only 3 attending Colorado's camp, the range between teams is high.

Some teams (Tampa Bay LightningNew York Rangers) have already finished camps, but most are going on this week with a few outliers next week. This allows for several undrafted players to attend multiple camps.

Below is a list of every active and future college player attending a development camp sorted by NHL team.

Note that this is just active and future players. There are many more with college ties who have graduated or signed a professional contract attending development camps that are not included for the purposes of this list. So a player like recently graduated national champ Daniel Carr of Union is not on this list despite attending Montreal's camp.

At the same time, not every NHL team has released a development camp roster. (Not every list is the same. Some just have names, some have teams and then there's a Florida, who includes Twitter handles, or Washington making a media guide.) A few clubs - Buffalo, Carolina, New Jersey and Pittsburgh - are holding camps next week and only a few players are known. (7/15 UPDATE: All 30 teams have released rosters.)

We will update this list when that happens, but if you see someone not here who should be, let us know.

Keys: *** indicates player was invited. College team listed in parenthesis. 2015 indicates player will begin freshman season that year. A player in italics is attending multiple camps.

Odds & Ends

Most college invites by team: (note one player can go to multiple camps)

Chicago: 34 (invited nearly 60 players total)

Winnipeg: 20

Detroit: 19

Washington: 19

New York Islanders: 17

Boston: 15

Minnesota Wild: 15

Least college players:

Colorado: 3

Dallas: 4

Nashville: 4

Columbus: 5

Los Angeles: 5

3 or more players from 1 school at a team camp

Boston (Yale)

Calgary (Providence)

Chicago (Northeastern with 4, North Dakota with 4, Ohio State with 4, Yale)

Columbus (Minnesota Golden Gophers)

Detroit (Colgate)

New Jersey Devils (Colgate, Boston College)

Winnipeg (Michigan Tech)

-Yep, Chicago has a lot of players. And Yale takes the ball that many schools follow with two players from the same team attending a camp (to cut down costs?) and ups it by having 3 players at two different development camps. That only gets matched by Colgate, a team that featured only one drafted player (Tim Harrison - Calgary) last season.

-All facts come from the original posting and may have changed with updates.

Don't forget, we also sorted by college teams - this is long enough for one post - so see which colleges are represented for your team there.
