2014 Frozen Four: Wells Fargo Center draws 36,503 for the weekend

PHILADELPHIA -- NCAA Hockey's first trip to the City of Brotherly love ended with the sixth-highest championship attendance.

The 2014 Frozen Four in Philadelphia drew an announced crowd of 36,503 over two games, according to the NCAA. That includes 18,742 in the championship game, which saw Schnectedy, NY based Union become the third team since 2008 to come back after giving up the first goal and defeat Minnesota 7-4 for its first national title in school history.

"Oh, I'm just extremely excited for our program, our school, for the community," said Dutchmen head coach Rick Bennett, whose team finished the season on a 17 game unbeaten streak. "For every player that has worn that jersey, for every coach that's coached here before us, I think it's a tremendous accomplishment. I want to thank them.

The total is slightly higher than last year's 18,184 for the 2013 Frozen Four in Pittsburgh although that game was a officially a sellout. Wells Fargo Center has a capacity of 19,537 for ice hockey.

Two nights before the NCAA announced 17,751 for both semifinals.

Union will look to defend its national championship - the second consecutive one won by the ECAC - next April in Boston.
