Bicks’ Overview the Cawlidge Hawkey Regionals

Bicks’ Overview the Cawlidge Hawkey Regionals

The excitement continues to grow as the college hockey season moves along. In the regional tournaments we saw star come out to shine, upsets in double OT that every fan enjoyed, and Union team that is real good but not many people have heard of them.

Let start by talking about this little school in Schenectady, NY, Union College, maybe a surprise for some that this team is in the Frozen Four but for others they saw this coming. Union is a high scoring machine but the offense might not come from who you except; Union has two defensemen with over 30 points and a third line that plays like a first line. Shayne Gostisbehere, a future Flyer was buzzing around the ice like he wants that NHL contract after the year is over (only a junior). Mat Bodie, the captain for Union scores too, he had 2 big goals for the team this weekend. But you can’t talk about Union without talking about the third line of Novak, Sullivan, and Hatch, which totaled an amazing 12 points in the two regional games. To get the Frozen Four Union beat Vermont 5-2 and Providence 3-1 and were they first team to punch their ticket to Philly.

Bicks MVP for the East Regional: Max Novak who had 3 goals, 1 assist and +5 on the weekend.

Now let’s talk about who Union is going to play in the Frozen Four, Boston College the champion of the Northeast Regional. BC is 5 time National Champ and they are back in the Frozen Four after missing out on it last year. Boston College is led by a potion offense, who led the NCAA in goals per game in the regular season. Their top line of Hayes, Gaudreau, and Arnold, might be the best line in college hockey. Johnny Gaudreau, aka Johnny Hockey, led BC in scoring during the regular season and just continued his greatness in the regional tournament. Johnny Hockey, a future Calgary Flame, might be the best player in college and we will find out if his is soon enough because both Hayes and Gaurdeau are up for the Hobey Baker Award (the Heisman of cawlidge hawkey). BC path to the Frozen Four consisted of a dominance 6-2 performance over Denver and a nail biting 4-3 victory over Umass Lowell.

Bicks MVP for Northeast Regional: Johnny Hockey, 3 goals and 5 assist on the weekend.

The Midwest Regional consisted of upset that surprised some people. North Dakota upset #1 seed Wisconsin in their first round. Their regional consisted of two different story lines. In the first game they came out with a high powered offense, led by a hat trick by Rocco Grimaldi, and beat Wisco 5-2. Game two though, totally different. They came out with that nitty gritty grinder hockey that we are used to seeing North Dakota play. They counted on their goalie, Zane Gothberg 44 saves, and took their chance when they could. It might have taken double-overtime against Ferris State but North Dakota is heading to Philadelphia to try to win another National Title. Their last one was back in the year 2000.

Bicks MVP of the Midwest Regional: Zane Gothberg 66 saves 3 GA and a .957 save percentage

On to the West Regional, where we say the battle of Minnesota to see who went on to Philly, the hockey state couldn’t have been happier with the final two teams. The final consisted of Minnesota vs. St. Cloud State, but Minnesota proved they still are they best team but the future looks bright for the Huskies. The Phenomenal Freshman for Minnesota continued to impress me in the West Regional, recording 9 points on the weekend (4 goals and 5 assist). The leadership and goal scoring ability of their captains, Kyle Rau and Nate Condon, also showed up, in which both of them had 3 points. Even with all this goal scoring you still need someone to stop the puck and the Gophers have one of the best goalies in the country in, Adam Wilcox, the Big Ten Player of the Year and a finalist for the Hobey Baker. I expect him to really shine in the Frozen Four.

Bicks MVP of the West Regional: Justin Kloos 3 goals on the weekend
